Concrete formwork is the core temporary system that shapes fresh concrete and supports structural loads during the curing phase. Proper formwork removal timing is one of the most critical factors for structural safety, flawless concrete finishing, and optimized construction schedules. Early removal leads to concrete cracking, edge spalling and structural deflection, while overdue stripping reduces formwork turnover rate and raises overall project costs.
Based on international building codes (ACI, Eurocode) and global on-site construction best practices, we have sorted out the standardized formwork removal time classified by structural members. All time benchmarks apply to standard commercial concrete under normal ambient temperature (≥10°C).
1. Vertical Members: Column & Wall Formwork
✅ Recommended Stripping Time: 24 Hours After Pouring
Component Feature: Columns and walls are vertical non-load-bearing side formworks. They only function in concrete shaping and mortar sealing, without bearing horizontal bending stress.
Technical Basis: After 24-hour natural curing, the concrete achieves approximately 50% of the designed compressive strength. It owns stable surface hardness to maintain geometric integrity without edge damage during demolding.
Site Tip: Extend the stripping time appropriately in low-temperature or high-humidity environments to prevent surface peeling.
2. Regular Floor Slab Formwork
✅ Recommended Stripping Time: 3–5 Days After Pouring
Component Feature: Horizontal load-bearing slabs with a conventional span ≤ 6m. The bottom formwork bears the dead weight of fresh concrete and temporary construction loads.
Technical Basis: Concrete gains 70%–80% design strength after 3 to 5 days of curing, which is sufficient to support self-weight and routine on-site loads independently.
Site Tip: Fast-hardening concrete slabs can be stripped on the 3rd day; thickened conventional slabs are recommended for removal on the 5th day. Retain partial temporary shores for secondary safety protection.
3. Heavy-Duty Load-Bearing Members: Beam & Long-Span Slab
✅ Recommended Stripping Time: 7–10 Days After Pouring
Component Feature: Primary force-bearing structures including all load-bearing beams and slabs with a span over 6m. These members withstand high bending stress and have the strictest demolding requirements.
Technical Basis: Full design strength (100%) is reached after 7–10 days of continuous curing, effectively avoiding long-term deflection, structural cracks and permanent deformation.
Site Tip: For super-long-span structures (span > 12m), conduct on-site strength testing prior to demolding and prolong the curing time if test data requires.
4. Universal Demolding Guidelines & Safety Rules
Strength Priority Rule: The above timeframes are for reference only. On-site concrete compressive strength test results shall be the final standard for formwork removal.
Temperature Adjustment: Cold weather slows down strength development. Delay all demolding time by 20%–40% for winter construction projects.
Standard Demolding Sequence: Remove side non-load-bearing formwork first, then bottom load-bearing formwork; strip horizontal members from the mid-span to both ends.
